Sand Wash Basin DNA Project

Last fall when the Bait and Trap started in Sand Wash Basin, Aletha and I discussed the possibility of obtaining DNA from the Wild Horses as they were gathered. As it turned out the Bait and Trap was not a good place to gather DNA, but rather than being discouraged we looked for other ways to obtain the hair samples that we needed.

We believe that knowing the origins of the Sand Wash Basin Wild Horses will be very important in the future.  We hope that knowing the DNA will help win the war on what is a Wild Horse and why they are important to our heritage.

We also believe that once the birth rate is stabilized and the BLM is looking at who should be darted, with the help of DNA we can provide some guidelines that will help preserve historic bloodlines, color lines and lineage that is important to the Basin.

There are several of us that are now collecting DNA when we lose a Wild Horse in the Basin, and we are personally paying for the testing.  We have also reached out to the adopters of the Sand Wash Basin Wild Horses and have had some DNA samples sent to us, and some have chosen to pay for their own and sent us the results.

On this page we will share with you the results.  We have been pleased with what we are finding, as most are showing lots of Spanish heritage.
