Be Respectful

Foaling season in an exciting time to be in a Herd Management Area. It is also a time of higher anxiety within the wild horse bands. Please be respectful to the new dam and foal. The first couple of days after a foal are born are critical to its survival.

Remember to get no closer than 100 ft. Do not surround the band and do not get in the middle of the band, or between bands.

Pay close attention to the body language of the mare and the stallion. The mare and the stallion may be more protective and more easily agitated.

Mares will normally come into a foal heat within 10 days of giving birth. This will cause more stallion activity and its a time of high danger to the new foal.

Please leave the area if you see any signs of anxiety within the band.

The BLM is not interested in the names of the Wild Horses and has not authorized any one organization, or person, to name the new foals. SWAT is responsible for creating a “BLM number” for the new foals. The BLM refers to the Wild Horses by that number. SWAT and Wild Horse Warriors, monitor the Wild Horses in Sand Wash Basin and report numbers to the BLM. Those numbers include deaths, number of Wild Horses known to be out of bounds in Sand Wash Basin, and the number of new foals born each year. According to the SWAT page, they turn their numbers in when requested by the BLM.

Our MOU states that we will turn in our numbers once a year, with our yearly report.

We also do a monthly report that has updated wild horse numbers along with locations of the bands, vegetation growth and water levels, along with the number of observed visitors to the basin.

Sand Wash Basin Advocate Team (SWAT)

To name a foal submit a photo to SWAT with your name suggestion.

If the foal has not be previously documented they will assign an ID number and your name choice.

They will let you know if the foal has already been documented.

They will only use photos shared to their page by the photographer, or if someone submits a photo for you they will need to contact SWAT and give them permission to use the photo in their Foal Album.

Please submit a good photo of the dam and or the band to help SWAT ID the mare. If you know the dam please share that information.

The photo needs to be more than just a couple of ears or a hind leg. SWAT will need to be able to identify the foal if a second photos comes in.

You do not need to get close enough or stay long enough to determine gender, that can be added at a later date. If gender is not determined please pick a gender neutral name.
